Families come home from Ghana with kente, carved animals, a drum that nobody plays, and a phone full of photos nobody prints. The adults remember the trip. A young child mostly does not. Think how little you remember of anywhere you went at four. What a young child keeps is the story told about it afterwards, again and again, until it becomes their memory. A book is a good way to tell it. Why a book, rather than a souvenir It gets read, not displayed. Bedtime is a nightly chance to bring the trip back. It is about them. A carving is about Ghana; a book with your child as the hero is about them in Ghana. It lasts. A book goes on a shelf and is still there years later, long after the fridge magnet. Back on the bridge Our story, Aseye and the Bridge in the Sky, is set at the canopy walkway in Kakum National Park, the rope bridges high above the rainforest that many visiting families walk. Your child is the hero, drawn from your photo onto every page: frightened at first, then brave, crossing the bridge with a grown-up beside them who you name, a parent, a grandparent, an auntie. If you walked the canopy together, the book is close to the real day. If your child was too small, or you did not make it to Kakum, it is still the rainforest and the country you visited, with them in it. If you are not Ghanaian You do not need to be. The book is not about being Ghanaian; it is a story about a brave child, set somewhere real. For a family who has visited, it is a lasting piece of the place. Our guide to visiting Kakum with children covers the trip itself. Ordering once you are home We deliver to the UK, the US and Canada (£24.99 + £4.00 UK delivery in the UK) as well as Ghana, and a book arrives in 1–2 weeks from your order, printing included. Pick a recent photo of your child, ideally not one in a sun hat on the trip, because the face and hair need to be clear. If you live somewhere else, email hello@glibooks.com and we will see what we can do. We should be honest about scope: we have one title, set at Kakum. If your trip was to Kenya, Tanzania or South Africa, we do not have a book set there yet. Can I order from the UK or the US after our trip? Yes. We deliver to the UK, the US and Canada as well as Ghana, and a book arrives in 1–2 weeks from your order, printing included. Should I use a holiday photo? Only if the face and hair are clear. A sun hat, sunglasses or harsh sun across the face make it harder; a recent photo at home in daylight often works better. Does the book show the real Kakum canopy walkway? The story is set there: the rope bridges above the rainforest at Kakum National Park, illustrated in the book's own style.
